Boat Dive - SS Marlay

The SS Marlay is one of the most popular and rewarding wreck dives on the east coast. Built in Belfast in 1890, this 798-ton steel steam collier was bound for Dublin with a heavy cargo of coal when she tragically foundered during a massive storm in December 1902.

Today, she lies roughly 4km east of Howth Head, resting on her starboard side on a clean sandy seabed. While her upper superstructure has collapsed over the decades, the hull remains remarkably intact.

It is an incredibly atmospheric dive. The massive boilers, engine machinery, and sections of the propeller shaft are all completely exposed, and mounds of her original coal cargo are still scattered across the seabed. Because of its location, the wreck has become a thriving artificial reef, absolutely covered in anemones and teeming with massive conger eels, lobsters, and schooling pollack.

Dive Specifications: 

• Depth: 18m to 22m 
• Suitability: Experienced divers (Minimum of Advanced Open water)
• Conditions: Subject to Tidal Currents. This site is strictly dived on slack water windows for maximum visibility and safety.

Please note: The SS Marlay is protected under Irish maritime heritage laws, and diving this site requires a valid dive survey license, which we manage ahead of the trip.

EQUIPMENT / CYLINDER HIRE

We have a limited supply of dive equipment available. Any member requiring a dive cylinder of dive equipment must book it online through the Equipment Hire section at least 24 hrs in advance to ensure it will be brought to the boat for the dive.

NOTE: Equipment hire is available ONLY when diving with Nauti Diver or Triton Diving.
