The SS Polwell is an incredible, substantial piece of First World War history lying roughly three miles northeast of Lambay Island. Originally a German vessel captured at the outbreak of the war, she was requisitioned by the British Admiralty as an armed steam collier before being torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1918.
At over 92 metres long, this is a massive wreck with a huge footprint on the seabed. While historically thought to be completely intact, modern surveys show she has broken into three distinct sections, with the detached bow and a collapsing upper deck offering a fascinating, complex layout to explore.
Because of its offshore location, the wreck acts as a thriving artificial reef and is absolutely teeming with local marine life, including large conger eels, crabs, lobsters, and massive schooling fish.
Dive Specifications:
- Depth: 30m to 36m
- Suitability: Experienced divers only (Minimum Advanced Open Water)
- Conditions: Highly tidal area. The site must be dived at high slack. Excellent bouyancy is required to avoid disturbing the silty seabed.
Please note: Due to the depth and commercial fishing activity in the area, all divers must carry proper cutting tools.
